A collection of work from the New York-based photographic manipulator, Anthony Scibelli.

Anthony’s current work encompasses photo montage, double exposures and single images. Anthony also creates one-of-a-kind handmade books. His body of work fully explores and manipulates the possibilities of the double exposure medium, blending classic images with nature, reality and dreamlife. At first glance the images appear unpolished, and not always obvious in content. Unfolding the images reveals an aesthetic of silence and stillness, yet not entirely without theatrics. The consequence is a resonance, a place between two images - on the edge of invisibility.

Closer to Val Talberg (who he showed with at the beginning of his career in New York) than Jerry Uelsmann, Anthony takes cues from his subjects. Yet Anthony’s relationship with each image prevails over the connection between the images themselves. This reverberating double sight reminds us of William Blake’s double world, and therefore to Anthony’s acknowledgment in the art world as the American surrealist link.

What to others a trifle appears
Fills me fills of smiles or tears
For double the vision my eyes do see
And a double vision is always with me
With my inward eye "tis an old man grey
With my outward a thistle across my way

-William Blake

Anthony says, "The work on view is an emanation from reality, like shadows or footprints - images generated by nature itself." In a medium known for continuous movement and statement, Anthony’s work is a still, sheltered place...

Anthony’s recent exhibitions in New York include, Artopia Gallery on 57th Street; Ernaldo Cabellero, downtown; and Artproper in Southhampton. His most recent exhibit was at OOT’I Gallery in Sante Fe, New Mexico. He also took part in "Hope", Fifth Annual National Juried Exhibition and catalogue, Suffolk Community College Riverhead, NY, Rathbone Gallery at Sage Junior College, Albany, NY.

Six of these images are single negative or slide prints. The rest are sandwiched negatives or slides. In this technique, two pieces of film are placed together and Anthony prints right through them, in some case for over twenty minutes! In others, the double exposure is done on the paper itself. Anthony says he never knows what the final image will really be until it’s done.

Cameras used: Pentax 6x7, Nikon F3, Nikon N-90, Rollei 35 TE and Yashica T4 Super. These last two tiny and unassuming devices have Zeiss lenses. Anthony mainly uses Kodak T-Max 100 film for the B&W and color slides in a variety of speeds. All prints are archivally processed into fiber base paper; and for the color Cibachrome (now Ilfochrome) into beautiful large prints.

The images in this site are from slides of the prints, taken by Anthony. These were transferred to Kodak Photo CD from which digital images were corrected using Photoshop 4 and a variety of other tools. For the majority of images, all efforts were aimed at maintaining the faithfulness to the original prints. However, in a few cases, additional processing was done in order to maintain the spirit of the original, even if small liberties had to be taken.
